XP SP3 disables Remote Desktop ActiveX control

May 31, 2009

The Remote Desktop Web Connection ActiveX control allows you to access your computer through Remote Desktop, via the Internet, from another computer using Internet Explorer. It is also commonly used for remote lab training. In Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), you had to install the Msrdp.ocx file to enable the Terminal Services ActiveX control. Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) already includes this ActiveX control and installs it by using the Mstscax.dll file, however by default, this ActiveX control is disabled in Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). When you try run the Remote Desktop Web Connection window after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3, the following error may occur:

“Remote Desktop Web Connection ActiveX control is not installed. A connection cannot be made without a working installed version of the control.”

Note: The Connect button remains grayed out, as well.

It’s important to note that you may see other symptoms, as well.  These symptoms include:

If the user tries to enable the ActiveX control using the Manage add-ons dialog in Internet Explorer, the Microsoft RDP Active control may not be listed.

This can happen if a machine is built from an OS image with Service Pack 3 for Windows XP slipstreamed.  Windows XP machines that were upgraded to XP SP3 will likely not have this problem and can enable the control using the process is documented in KB951607.

To get this working again, please use one of the following methods to enable the ActiveX control:

Method 1
Use the Manage Add-ons dialog in Internet Explorer to enable the Terminal Services ActiveX Control.  See KB951607 for further instruction.

If the ActiveX control is not listed in Manage Add-ons dialog, follow Method 2 below.

Method 2

  1. Click Start, Run. Type Regedit.exe and press ENTER
  2. Navigate to the following branch:
  3. Double-click Settings to expand the branch.
  4. Right-click {7584c670-2274-4efb-b00b-d6aaba6d3850} and choose Delete
(Repeat step 4 to delete any other problem keys)
  5.  Click Yes when asked for confirmation.
Close all instances of Internet Explorer and re-run Remote Desktop Web Connection.

Has anyone heard of the Glamour Brothers? If yes, you probably know them as underwear models (maybe not even as that), until they decided to pass the classical tune Ma Baker through some beat filters to then release it as Ma Baker 2k9, making them the “looney,” DJ team in Europe.

Why NOT to activate Office immediately

May 30, 2009
  • Getting a product activation registers your use of Office on a particular computer – you should not do that until you’re sure you are happy with that computer.
  • Certain events e.g. new PC doesn’t work properly and has to be repaired or replaced, you decide to switch Windows versions (eg XP to Vista or vice-versa, can force you to reinstall Office yet again after a short time. Sure, you can call Microsoft and explain what happened but if you didn’t activate Office in the first place, the later install and activation is more likely to go through quickly.
  • You can use Office 2007 without product activation (or even a Product Key in many cases) for the first 25 times you start an Office program.
  • There is no risk that you’ll forget to activate Office later. There’s a prompt to activate when you start Office and after the ‘no activation’ limit Office goes into a ‘reduced functionality’ mode. Once you’ve activated Office returns to it’s full glory.

If you’re using a laptop, make sure Office is activated before you start travelling, especially if you might be disconnected from the Internet.

Delaying activation is quite possible and lets you ensure that the computer you’re using is a stable and suitable platform for Microsoft Office. Make use of that opportunity.

Gypsy Woman 2k9 – great single cover

May 29, 2009

Due to my opinion that DJays tweaking great classical club athems are just after a quick buck by banking on the anthem’s previous success, remakes don’t usually go down well with me, but Tristan Garner’s remix of Gypsy Woman makes this Baleric classic worthwhile hearing again and again and again…The single cover is also nice to look at.
