Moving AD Database to a Different Location.

QUESTION: I am running out of disk space on my system partition on drive C. Is it possible to move the Active Directory database to drive D?

ANSWER: The Active Directory database resides in %SystemRoot%\NTDS\ntds.dit file by default. You can move the database using the ntdsutil utility. Restart your domain controller and press F8. Select the Directory Services Restore Mode from the menu. Log on as administrator, go to the command prompt and start ntdsutil to get the ntdsutil prompt. Follow the instructions listed below.

ntdsutil:
files
file maintenance
move DB to D:\ntds
info (This will give you the information about the database.)
integrity (This will verify the integrity of the database.)
press q twice to exit the ntdsutil utility

The info and integrity commands are optional. Reboot your domain controller and logon to the domain. Your database should now be moved to the new location on drive D.
