Word: Axiom.

maxim: a saying that is widely accepted on its own merits; (logic) a proposition that is not susceptible of proof or disproof; its truth is assumed to be self-evident; A statement or assertion that is accepted without proof. Simply put, an axiom is a self-evident truth.

Usage: “Perhaps the attackers have inadvertently done me a favour!” Tew later blogged. Word of the hit had increased his site’s traffic, proving one of the great axioms of business: There’s no such thing as bad PR.
