Although the Windows’ Defrag utility is great for optimizing your hard drive(s), it can unfortunately be a long and tedious process. An alternative solution can be via the following Registry hack that forces XP to automatically optimize the location of files when your PC is idle.
- Run >> Regedit
- Browse to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OptimalLayout
- Find the string called EnableAutoLayout, and change its data value to 1. (If this string doesn’t exist, create it and set the value to 1.)
- Exit RegEdit and reboot your PC.
