XP Registry Setting to Automatically Optimize Hard Disk when Idle .

Although the Windows’ Defrag utility is great for optimizing your hard drive(s), it can unfortunately be a long and tedious process. An alternative solution can be via the following Registry hack that forces XP to automatically optimize the location of files when your PC is idle.

  1. Run >> Regedit
  2. Browse to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OptimalLayout
  3. Find the string called EnableAutoLayout, and change its data value to 1. (If this string doesn’t exist, create it and set the value to 1.)
  4. Exit RegEdit and reboot your PC.
